When I shut down the server farm, I didn’t realize that I had never moved the primary name server into the cloud. It was actually running on the same server as my PBX. There are secondaries, so everything continued to work as it was supposed to, but I wanted to make some changes either to bring the web servers back at a new address or at least redirect them to an explanation of why they’re down. Without access to the primary name server, however, I’m unable to make changes to the DNS address assignments. (It also means that I can’t renew my Let’s Encrypt TLS certificates, but I think I have a couple of weeks yet before they’re due.)

I had reached the weight limit for my checked bag, so I only brought the mail server. HA then sent the web and PBX servers after me by USPS, and the remainder will go on the boat. The package arrived today, so I set up the PBX (so my many phone numbers have started working again). It also means that I can again access my primary name server, but will probably do so only to move it into the cloud for now.

There are loose ends: I can receive faxes, but I cannot send them because I can’t figure out how to get mail routed to the new server (I think my ISP is blocking incoming packets from the greater net). I’m also not quite ready to set up the web server, as we currently have very limited solar capacity and I don’t want to kick us over into having to use the gasoline-fired generator.

All in all, though, progress!
