Luna the Big Dog™ is a dog who likes to go. The temperatures on the island are usually mild (though the sun can get pretty intense) and Joulee the Free Salvage Tesla is capable of running the air conditioning when we’re out of the car, so it’s usually pretty easy to take Luna along with us. Add the fact that I tend not to leave the mountain at all, and Luna is rarely left alone in the compound.

“Rarely,” though, is not “never.” Occasionally, we both leave and Luna cannot come along. If it’s raining (and since April it’s always been raining) we often leave her in the house. She seems marginally happier outside, and there are dry places she can hang out, but she still gets wet and muddy and that adds to a grooming burden that isn’t trivial even at baseline.

She is allowed to get up on the couches and benches. It’s not her favorite thing, but she does it from time to time. She is not allowed on the bed: she’s just too big. HA and I are both tall and adding a 110 lb dog, even to a king bed, just wouldn’t leave enough room for us. She has only rarely ever tested that boundary, and doesn’t really seem to mind. Yet, when we leave her in the house alone, there is almost always evidence that she has slept on the bed (a dent in the covers, tufts of fur).

The lure of forbidden fruit isn’t just a human thing.
