Comets visible by naked eye are unusual. There’s a remarkable one right now with the catchy name C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. Look to the western horizon 45 minutes or so after sunset. It should continue to be visible for another week or two.

We decided to go down to the western coast of the island last night to look for it. We were not disappointed. This image was taken with my cellphone camera’s night mode setting; IRL the navigation beacon and rock jetty were not visibly illuminated, the sky was dark, and the comet itself, while clearly visible, was not so dramatic — but still an amazing sight.
