A little over a year ago, Luna the Big Dog™ came to the island compound. We had inherited a cat, Louise, from the previous owner and had been caring for her for a couple of years at that point, but she took one look at Luna and took off. I continued to feed her in a safe place under the house, but except for one indignant encounter when the cat feeder had malfunctioned, we haven’t seen her in the flesh. I did have a motion-sensing camera by the feeding area, and the ghost cat would show up every night, sometimes multiple times, to eat. Otherwise, she was nowhere to be found.

About a week ago, she stopped showing up. I kept putting out food, but it started attracting rats and even a mongoose.

I have removed the cat feeder but left the camera just in case Louise shows back up. The neighbors say they’ve seen a black cat around, so perhaps she’s just found a home without a pesky malamute guarding it.
