photo of the chickens' nesting boxes, with a steep plywood roof installed above them

Remember when we installed bird spikes to keep the chickens from hanging out on top of their nesting boxes? We were afraid they’d lay up there and the eggs would roll off and break. They also would poop up there and it would all roll off onto the place where we’re supposed to catch the eggs. So, yuck.

We still haven’t got any eggs, but I suppose it’s a bit early yet. After all, they were just week-old chicks in mid-March. The bird spikes didn’t work, though. They would still poo all over the roof, even when we installed many, many more spikes. Then we had chicken shit protected by the spikes and almost impossible to clean.

The Hand had had enough, and put this steeply-pitched plywood roof over the nesting boxes. So far, there’s no evidence that the chickens have spent any time trying to roost (or poop) above the nesting boxes.

Now, girls, will it be eggs or huli huli??
