The mainland house had a rather dark inside hallway with two stairways in it. When we first moved there, I was concerned that my sons would have trouble navigating the stairs in the dark. I solved the problem with Wyze night lights, which worked well for a couple of years (long enough for me to realize that my children were far too old for me to be worrying about them falling down stairs) but then they started failing to hold a charge. Regular readers (both of you!) will recall that my efforts to replace the batteries proved impractical.

Here at the island house we have to be stingy with our electricity, so we don’t leave lights on at night. I kind of use my Ambient weather station display as a nightlight in the kitchen, but otherwise the house is really dark. There are no street lights or neighbor’s lights shining in the windows, so most of our nighttime illumination comes when the moon is near full — and it’s beautiful! That’s a problem, though, when using the bathroom at night or finding clothes in the walk-in closet (formerly a tiny bedroom). Neither of those rooms have a light switch conveniently located by the door (remember, the house was built in 1914).

Remembering the Wyze nightlights, I searched online for rechargeable, motion-activated lights and found these:

They were in a 3-pack for less than $5/light. I didn’t do a comprehensive review, but these fit my need so I bought a pack. They’re perfect for lighting up the bathroom and closet only when I need.

They’re a convenient and energy-efficient way to get a little bit of light just where and when you need it, without otherwise messing with the beautiful moonscapes.

Echoing the original use for the Wyze night lights, I ended up putting the third motion-triggered light on the front porch. That’s the path to the outdoor shower and the landscape lighting is positioned in a way that makes the top step coming off the porch completely disappear. I almost tripped going down it a couple of times. Now it’s clearly illuminated as soon as I step out the front door.
