No sooner had a finished with the pavilion walk than I realized that a small addition would make a huge difference. Just off the pavilion path is an incredibly picturesque set of lava-slab steps that leads down to the path to the pasture.

We take those steps multiple every day, as they lead not just to the pasture, but thence to the sheep barn, the henhouse, and on to the solar plant and backup generators and the studio. We take them when we feed the chickens or gather eggs. We take them when we check on the sheep. We take them when we test or fire up or refuel the generators. We take them when we have business in the studio. There is a path of somewhat widely-spaced 12”×12” precast concrete stepping stones. If you’re a good dancer, you can get all the way from the bottom of the steps, through the slot in the downed tree, to the infrastructure that’s makai of the house without ever stepping on grass or mud. Today, while the sun was shining, I moved a bit more (wet, heavy) sand into the back yard and placed three more lava rock pavers to complete a path from the pavilion walk to the steps.

Now, even if the rain comes back, we’ll have a dry path from the house all the way to the studio and points between.
