This is not a column about social media.

This house is well over a hundred years old (built in 1914) and, not surprisingly, didn’t have indoor plumbing when it was built. A bathroom was added in the early 1930’s, though, and with it a cesspool. As far back as I can go (about 35 years) it has never been serviced. That likely means that it’s in pretty porous ground and dug pretty deep. In fact, it may have been dug down to fractured lava. With careful management, it might never need servicing though apparently the law will require that it be replaced with a septic tank by 2050. We’ll cross that bridge in the future.

The problem is, if the cesspool ever does need to be serviced, we need to know exactly where it is. I had my suspicions, based on the location of the waste plumbing and a vague description from the previous owner, but the recent spell of dry weather has caused grass above cesspools all over the area to turn brown.

Voilà! We now know the location precisely.

PS. The weather reports around here are notoriously inaccurate, but we’re scheduled to get a slight amount of rain tomorrow and somewhat more over the weekend.
