Happy Independence Day to those in the US who celebrate.
This time last year, we were very worried about wildfires, we were in a drought, and most conversations included a wish for rain.
Things are different this year. In the last three days we have had over six inches of rain. It has rained almost every day this year so far: over 92 inches. We’re within our annual average of 80-160 inches even though we’re only halfway through the year. Rainy season officially ended (and hurricane season started) on 01May, but the rain hasn’t slowed down. Most conversations now include at least one wish for a dry, sunny day or two.
I’d like that too, if only to be able to finish the pasture eFence and get the sheep back to their job of mowing. It’s also nice to get the occasional bright, sunny day to charge up Joulee the Free Salvage Tesla and get the house batteries topped up. Still, in spite of all the rain and clouds, Joulee has been drivable, the hot tub has been hot and we haven’t had to be careful with our power use.
The plants — all the plants! — are growing like crazy. The sheep are devouring the grass whenever they can get to it. The hens find lots of grubs upon which to forage when they’re free-ranging, and they’re laying prolifically. The catchment tank is full. The greens and herbs are healthy.
After all, it is a rainforest, and we really shouldn’t complain about a little rain.
