We got our freezer back in March 2025. For a year and a half, it’s been chugging away keeping our bulk food purchases literally ice cold. I even put a temperature monitor in it to keep track of the temperature in case the freezer or its power failed, or it got left open. Alas, even the tiny razor cut in the insulation through which I threaded the temperature probe (or perhaps the warmth brought in by the probe’s copper wire) led to a great deal of frost buildup. Sure, 18 months is a good, long time, particularly in our ultra-humid environment, but eventually the top drawer was frozen in place.
Today was a Costco day, and we had depleted much of our frozen food and HA would be gone all day, so it seemed an opportune time to open the freezer up and let it thaw.
There was a lot more ice than first appeared, and though the lower shelves cleared quickly, the top shelf and the drawer below it remained well iced-up. Remembering what my mother used to do with our not-yet-frost-free refrigerator when I was a lad, I put baking dishes with boiling water under the slabs of ice. It’s mostly gone now, I hope in time for HA’s return with the Costco booty.
