Back when HA was away, our municipal water supply failed. We have a catchment system for backup, but I hadn’t yet put in a filtration system. So I could shower and do dishes and flush toilets but I couldn’t drink water or make coffee. The outage was brief, and I had plenty of potable water stored for emergency use, but the event prompted me to buy a little countertop reverse-osmosis + UV water filter so we wouldn’t be caught with water, water all around/and not a drop to drink should the muni supply fail in the future.

I love it. The water tastes sooooo good! So I’ve started using the filter for all my drinking water and coffee making. I bought a package with an extra carafe (which, oddly, was cheaper than the version with only a single carafe) so I always just keep two in the fridge. When one gets empty, I put it in the filter unit and fill it (it takes four minutes or so). I then fill the coffee maker from that, and put the carafe in the fridge behind the cold one.

For some reason, HA seems reluctant to use the water filter. I think I did a poor job of explaining how it works and only managed to communicate that it’s more complicated than it looks. So add emptying, refilling, and maintaining the water filter as another daily task for Infrastructure Man.
