the RSS icon

A protocol from the previous century is still getting attention from folks concerned about the enshittification of the internet. I’m talking, of course, about RSS which I have mentioned before. You really should give it a look.

Molly White

Molly White is an excellent writer, software engineer, and blogger who reports in the cryptocurrency space at Web3 is Going Just Great and Citation Needed. She just published a great article on why and how to use RSS. The article is well worth a read, and if you have any interest in the politics of cryptocurrency then a subscription to her newsletters would be of interest.

the Fediverse

Federated social media (the Fediverse) is the antidote to those centralized for-profit social media sites that will bleed you dry to feed their corporate overlords. The most popular Fediverse service seems to be Mastodon, a microblogging system that delivers on the promise of Twitter/X but without the horror of attention-driven advertising and the dreaded Algorithm.

If you want to follow someone’s public Mastodon posts but not necessarily interact with them, you can do that using Mastodon’s RSS support and see their posts along with your other RSS subscriptions. Just use their profile address with “.rss” appended as their feed address in your favorite RSS reader.
