I put solar fence lights around the hot tub about a year ago. They were great for getting in and out of the tub, but once we built the new pavilion the path from the bottom of the deck stairs to the pavilion stairs was dark. More solar fence lights wouldn’t really work because of the lush vegetation below the deck. The ground there is a bit uneven, and risky to navigate in the dark.

Right before Thanksgiving, I hurriedly installed a couple of landscape lights connected to our front yard landscape lighting. They did a fine job lighting the path and the backyard plants, but I just barely had enough wire to connect them and I could do nought but lay the wire in straight line from the lights to the outdoor shower where they connected to the lights in front.

It was only meant to be temporary.

The temporary status ended when I was using a string trimmer in the back, and it snagged a piece of the wire and wound it tightly onto the trimmer’s spool, forcibly disconnecting the the lights. I ordered more wire, and yesterday finally got to re-connecting it. I routed it well behind the lawn area to under the deck, and put it in partially-buried conduit where it traversed the lawn between the deck and pavilion, and between the pavilion and the shower. I was also able to route the power for the pavilion lights through the same conduit.

photo of conduit, before burial, with the lighting wiring being routed through it; a large-diameter white PVC pipe is visible with a fish tape and balck wire running through it, running from under the deck to under the pavilion

We have backyard lighting again, just in time for the arrival of our next guests (who are much more likely to want to go to the pavilion after dark than was my father-in-law). Further, it should be safe from the predations of the Weed Whacker.

When it gets dark, I’ll take a picture of the lights in action.
